ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how Crow people discuss and understand rock art, it was necessary to develop a list of known rock art sites. Twenty rock art sites were identified by Crow consultants, and an additional 20 historic sites were selected for examination to understand similarities and differences. The Crow consultants explained that Castle Butte was situated along a historic Native trail that was extensively used by River Crow people. The Amanda site is located west of the community of Pryor, Montana, in a sandstone ridge cut by Pryor Creek. The Baby Place is at the north end of the long sandstone ridge directly west of Pryor, Montana, less than 500 yards from the Amanda site. Arrow Rock is a cliff that juts out of the mountain at the northeast end of Pryor Gap. The image identified as rock art by Crow consultants at the Bethune Fasting Site is located on a sandstone hoodoo in northern section of the Wolf Mountains.
