ABSTRACT

The generic response that Crow people give when asked generally about rock art is that ghosts produced it and that the images change to predict the future of the viewer. Some individuals have spiritual articles that give them the ability to control ghosts, allowing them to keep ghosts and their harmful practices away from themselves or others. These people often wear a black scarf to represent this power. It is believed that when ghosts see the black scarf, they are alerted that the person wearing it is not afraid of them and, in fact, can control them. The preeminent ghost site for the Crow is known by archaeologists as the Hoodoo site. With the exception of Hoodoo, it is not uncommon for Crow consultants to identify a site as historic or biographic and then later as ghost created, or vice versa.
