ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes and synthesizes criteria for quality qualitative research in the field of communication studies. It describes the process of conducting qualitative communication research, according to what the ten leading scholars included in this book describe and discuss. In the focus group, the chapter discusses their experiences with qualitative research in general and their advice to qualitative researchers. It focuses on a thematic analysis of the transcripts from the interviews of the scholars about how they conducted one specific qualitative research project. These scholars emphasizes the importance of being intentional in choosing the overarching methodology as well as specific methods of data collection, coding, analysis, and writing, using whichever best addresses their objective and best answers their research question. In the end, all of the scholars, regardless of methodological orientation, collect data that addresses their study goals and objectives, analyze it, connect it to theory and literature, make and support claims, and say interesting and intellectual things.
