ABSTRACT

This chapter is, in many ways, the most important one in the book. In the following pages we go to the heart of the matter: determining if archaeological deposits are located within the project area and in danger of being disturbed. Project managers typically are not involved in designing the archaeological characterization strategy; but we argue that project managers should be involved and engaged enough to understand the sampling strategy used to characterize the project area and interpret the results. We say this because it is usually the project manager who best understands the ground-disturbing activities that are planned.
