ABSTRACT

In this chapter we present three case studies, two of which were prepared by colleagues with whom we have had many conversations about preventing archaeological disasters. The first case is one of the classic North American archaeological disasters: the African Burial Ground. The following description was prepared by Tom King, whose publications (2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009) have shaped a generation of American cultural resource professionals. Tom knows this case well, and so we asked him to summarize the events and explain them for this book.
