ABSTRACT

Human burials and cemeteries present a special set of challenges to project managers. As the examples in this book have shown, projects that encounter human remains can have high consequences, especially in parts of the world where local peoples attach great meaning to the remains of their ancestors. Even if local peoples are not emotionally attached to burials in the area, the human remains (bones, associated grave goods, and the surrounding deposits) still must be addressed. Our goal in this chapter is to prepare you for the possibility of uncovering someone’s ancestor. We cannot tell you where not to dig, but we can give you a strategy to help minimize the risk of a major discovery of human remains.
