ABSTRACT

Any study of ceramic distributions must start with a note on the more obvious constraints imposed by communications, particularly within so mountainous a country as Baluchistan, but only those areas explored can be described in the space available. The surveys were concerned mainly with the districts of Sarawan and Jhalawan, but spilled over into Chagai at Nushki and that part of western Kachhi near the mouth of the Mula river. The district of Sarawan extends south of Quetta-Pishin and is bounded on the west by Chagai and Kharan, and by the Bolan Pass and Kachhi to the east. Kachhi, the eastern district of Baluchistan, lies at about 300 feet a. s. l. in the Kotra or Gandava area and the excessive heat makes fieldwork virtually impossible in the middle of the day unless undertaken during the winter. The important Harappan site, Pathani-damb I, lies on the edge of the desert.
