ABSTRACT

Bridges are one of the most common structures surveyed and documented by historic resource researchers. They range from humble concrete-and-steel girder spans found in almost any community, to covered bridges of the Northeast and Midwest, suspension bridges that span major waterways, and modern long-span bridges, the cable-stayed bridge. The following typology is arranged roughly chronologically by bridge material and type. The typology is designed to enable the researcher to identify the type of bridge being surveyed and its major components. The chapter concludes with a glossary of bridge terms referenced in the text.
