ABSTRACT

Our discovery suggested that Asia may have played a much more prominent role in human evolution and for much longer than generally believed. It also indicated how little is really known about early hominid evolution and dispersal anywhere. In fact, so many pieces of the jigsaw are missing that paleoanthropology should be in a continual state of flux as new evidence is unearthed, but historically this is not how many in the discipline have reacted to new, unexpected findings. The hominids found under a medieval castle in Dmanisi, Georgia—deep into the Eurasian landmass, thousands of kilometers from Africa, are a good example of actual evidence disrupting cherished convictions.
