ABSTRACT

The news that some of the Liang Bua hominid remains had been borrowed came like a bombshell. On November 1, 2004, while I was still in Australia, Soejono had prepared a letter for Jacob authorizing transfer of all the Liang Bua hominid remains from ARKENAS in Jakarta to the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) palaeoanthropology lab in Jogyakarta “for cleaning, conservation and analysis.” The letter was on Soejono’s personal letterhead and done without the knowledge or authority of the director of ARKENAS, Dr. Tony Djubiantono, who was later informed in a similar letter that Dr. Mike Morwood, as the University of New England (UNE) institutional counterpart, had been consulted and agreed. This was not correct.
