ON JULY 12, 1973, A FIRE SWEPT THROUGH THE NATIONAL PERSONNEL Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri. My father’s official employment files were destroyed, along with an estimated sixteen to eighteen million others. The St. Louis center was the central repository for archived files on government personnel in military and nonmilitary roles.
