HER NAME WAS EDNA MARIE CASLIN BUT SHE CALLED HERSELF ’REE, A nickname derived from the pronunciation of the last three letters of her middle name. She was, in 1945, a twenty-six-year-old raven-haired, plain-spoken beauty who had served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC).
