ABSTRACT
In the second half of the 20th century, there occurred a host of radical changes in Chinese language policy. These dramatic transformations of linguistic landscape in the world’s most populous country are still continuing, directly affecting every Chinese citizen. In spite of these adjustments taking place across China, in-depth research that describes the nature of these changes as well as their implications for the people in China is largely lacking (Zhou M. L., 2004). Since Chinese language policy during this period is such a complicated phenomenon, it is desirable that a wide range of assessments and investigations be made available. What we are trying to do in the following two chapters is to observe the issue with the approach proposed in the previous chapters, in the hope of interpreting the phenomenon with some insights and providing guidance for language managers when they design future language policies.
