ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the emerging popularity of suzhi in Chinese academic discourse to understand how far the discursive power of suzhi had been established in the Chinese academic domain and how the meaning and use of suzhi have evolved over time. It examines the development of suzhi is emerging categories of compounds containing a component of sushi in Chinese academic discourse and their relationship to key government policies and statements by Chinese leaders. The reason for focusing on suzhi compounds is that in academic discussions and official discourse, suzhi is often qualified, such as moral suzhi or students' suzhi. The chapter explains an exhaustive listing of all suzhi compounds in academic discourse and examining their development patterns, a complex research process combining principles and strategies of conventional qualitative and quantitative methods was designed. It also explains the database used for the analysis, the Chinese Academic Journal (CAJ) Database, accessed through the website of China Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI).
