ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book introduces the concept of transformational citizenship to encompass the common underlying cultural, philosophical and psychological foundation of suzhi and other civilising programs such as wenming, suzhi jiaoyu, hexie and zhongguo meng in post-Mao China. The technology of governance carried in the discourse of suzhi echo millennia-old Confucian political philosophy which prioritises transforming the 'person' over reason, with shame playing the prominent role in maintaining order. The book explains the concept and pattern of pan-politicization using the analogy of water control and canals to capture the post-Mao strategy of the party-state channeling and finally 'unifying' a certain mode of political thinking through the seemingly common and aspirational discourses as wenming, suzhi, hexie and zhongguo meng. The book provides a comparison between the Western and Chinese analogies of enlightenment to illustrate the author's core argument of transformational citizenship.
