ABSTRACT
During the Sino-Soviet friendship period, Soviet fashion gained currency in China and became a token of the new direction in Chinese worldviews. While wearing Lenin jackets, colorful shirts, and bulaji manifested one’s “correct’ political stance, it also served as a liberating force, sparking enthusiastic discussions about the interrelation between fashion, modernity, and the advantages of socialism. Through this complex interaction, the CCP wove its rhetoric of Sino-Soviet friendship into Soviet-style clothing and the larger tapestry of international socialist modernity. By looking into people’s fashion innovations, this chapter also shows how the Chinese populace reacted to the changes surrounding their everyday life.
