ABSTRACT

The key theoretical assumptions that inform and guide the research are outlined in this chapter. They are based on a literature review of transnationalism as the theoretical framework for understanding the practices and experiences of transnational Chinese migrants from China. Considerable attention is given to tracing the original theoretical articulation of this theory, its conceptual refinement, theoretical reformulation, and recent development in relation to those issues immediately associate with transmigration, such as citizenship, identity, sense of home, and belonging. The second part of this chapter focuses on the research methodology which was informed by the theories employed in this research.
