ABSTRACT

Lord Reith was talking about the first-generation British new towns, but his comment is equally applicable now. Town plan-ning is about creating the spatial opportunities for people to thrive. Cities in rich countries have that opportunity, if national and local politics allow. This chapter aims to inspire and trigger understanding by studying four cities which have seized the initiative – three from Europe and one from America. To a greater or lesser extent they were influenced by the activities of the Healthy Cities movement.
