ABSTRACT

From the perspective of spatial planning, physical health and well-being relate to two distinct aspects. In the first place, there are environmental qualities that impinge on physical health, for example, the quality of the air that we breathe (see Chapter 10). In the second place, there is the influence of the environment on behaviour, which is dealt with here (Figure 6.1). Lifestyle choices strongly influence physical health. The critical aspects of lifestyle affected by the urban environment are physical activity and diet. In terms of the Settlement Health Map, the chapter concentrates on the interaction between the built environment (sphere 6), lifestyles (sphere 2) and individual health and well-being (sphere 1).
