ABSTRACT

Physical and mental well-being are intimately connected, as are physical and mental illness. While, of course, people can be physically ill and remain happy, or depressed but physically well, our minds and bodies are conjoined. It is no accident that some of the same environmental features affect both mind and body: contact with nature and active recreational opportunities, an urban environment that encourages physical activity, accessible local facilities, safe and friendly streets. If, for example, we go for a brisk walk, play tennis or dig the garden for half-an-hour, we not only improve our physical fitness, but we feel better.
