ABSTRACT
Immediately after the installation of the People's Republic, a thoroughgoing land reform (which had already been rehearsed in areas taken over during the long civil war) liberated the cultivators from oppression and insecurity, raising the vast majority to the status of a middle peasant, that is, of a family with enough land to utilize their own labour and provide themselves more or less with a living.
