ABSTRACT

The reasons for migrating among young people often differ from those of people in other age groups. In Mali and Senegal, migration of young men and women corresponds to aspirations for a better life and trends among peers rather than being a response to environmental changes. This chapter presents young people and their aspirations as well as their preferences to stay in or migrate from the rural areas. In particular, international migration to Europe is still a desire for many and closely related to personal success. Although the migration of youth is often encouraged by better opportunities elsewhere and by individual aspirations, their financial support is crucial for most households in rural areas. Finally, this chapter highlights the different capabilities and aspirations related to the migration of the people surveyed and summarises different drivers of migration in the region as identified in the previous chapters.
