ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a condensed introduction to the Danish setting in which the two empirical studies, that the analyses in the book draw on, are conducted. Understanding the specific institutional setup as well as current trends in Danish society and culture is important for understanding how specific youth cultural practices look as well as which support systems are in place for young people on the margins of society. In recent years, elements of the universal principles underlying the Danish welfare state have changed radically, while others have remained surprisingly persistent. Although young Danes’ transitions have been re-structured and prolonged compared to those of earlier generations, they continue to be supported by welfare policies and benefits. However, neoliberal policies increasingly encourage young people to move more rapidly through the education system. These changes are affecting all young people, for example, by facilitating a ‘performance culture’, but young people in vulnerable situations, who are reliant on extra support, come under particular pressure because of the increasing demands and regulation.
