ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides the background to Everyday Sustainability, outlines the basic principles, and describes how this relates to other sustainability themes like energy use and climate change. It sets the scene for uncertainty and explores a time line of conception of sustainability and how we get from climate change and energy efficiency to Everyday Sustainability. The book introduces Energy Productivity, the Key Performance Indicator of Everyday Sustainability. It describes the three components of Everyday Sustainability: Technology and Capabilities, People and Behaviour and Managing Processes, and how these form a stable foundation in uncertain times. The book also introduces Value Adding, Value Enabling and Waste in terms of business processes and everyday procedures. It looks at the various tools and techniques that can help us identify and analyse value and waste at work.
