ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses relationships in the family, introducing with a box that suggests a particular listening strategy; that is, boxed information indicates the extent to which each of the six components of the HURIER model is relevant to listening effectiveness in that situation. The chapter explains the importance of listening to family members, and the variety of ways in which students listen to learn their responsibility as a listener in presentational speaking situations. It also discusses the ways in which they can derive the most benefit from a coaching relationship, the role they play as a listener in providing help, and the differences in listening to employees and listening to their supervisor. The chapter also explains the ways in which one can facilitate effective group process through listening the ways in which rumor affects employees' perceptions.
