ABSTRACT
We have shown that it is factories that make possible the establishment of a substantial and permanent foreign trade. Consequently the prosperity of the mercantile marine is also based upon growing industries. Transit trade alone can never be a satisfactory basis for the development of shipping and we shall illustrate this from the example of the Hansa Towns (chapter 29).
