ABSTRACT
The Czech Republic became an EU member on 1 May 2004 together with another seven countries of the former Soviet bloc, Cyprus and Malta. The accession crowned the period of intensive preparations for membership that started in the first half of the 1990s. Two major shifts occurred in May 2004, one concerning the administrative contacts between the EU and the Czech Republic and the second relating to the political debate on the EU and foreign policy in general.
