ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the management context in which the school went about its business in an effort to understand further the nature and sources of the pressures that the Parkside staff and senior leaders experienced. It addresses the issue of governance, focusing specifically on the power dynamics between the school and its sponsor. The chapter presents an account of the sponsor's view of the role of local governance. It outlines the lack of clarity about roles and the poor organisational arrangements, governors also expressed particular frustrations regarding the appointment of the chair of governors, a process that illustrated certain ambiguities in the Education for Future Trust (EfFT) accountability structures. The chapter points out that EfFT embraced the autonomy they were entitled to regarding management by setting up highly centralised governance systems, experimenting with leadership approaches and establishing new teachers' pay and conditions.
