ABSTRACT

Art and design is a fundamental and unique form of experience which cannot be replicated. Central to art and design lies the development of the senses based on observation, imagination and memory. Sight, touch, feeling and intellect need to be developed through an understanding of the elements of visual language, for example line, colour, texture, shape, form and space. Direct handling and manipulation of materials and the development of skills build upon a child's natural interest and pleasure in rhythm, movement, shape and colour. For the special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) pupil, as with all pupils, personal experience and personal responses may be a starting point for an art activity. There is a lot that can be done in terms of the physical environment to make activities more accessible and safe for pupils with special needs. Using appropriate and differentiated work is about making tasks accessible to the whole range of pupils within a class or teaching group.
