ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 delves into the question of personhood and ontology in a digital era. Here, I present the concept of the “dividual,” both in terms of Deleuzian philosophy and recent anthropology, offering up linkages to broader discussions about the nature of personhood in a digital culture and contemporary capitalism. It then moves onto consideration of two cultural phenomena-what I call “death selfies,” which include “killer selfies” and “selfies at funerals” as well as “digital remains,” paying special attention to the public discourse generated about them, which I reveals anxiety around the impending death of specifically Western forms of selfhood and personhood.
