ABSTRACT
From the standpoint of Labour, the payment of a living wage comes before every other claim. It comes before not only the farmer’s profit, but also the money lender’s interest, the landlord’s rent and the middleman’s toll on the product of agriculture. The argument that the farmer cannot afford to pay, even if it were true, would be neither here nor there.
