ABSTRACT

The value of philosophy is, in fact, to be sought largely in its very uncertainty. The art of philosophical technique begins in Greek antiquity as a way to carefully define ideas that matter such as the Good Life, happiness, virtues and knowledge. The social studies educator has a philosophy of life, and within that philosophy, he develops a philosophy of education which affects his curriculum and pedagogical choices. Theology might best be considered the application of metaphysics to religious beliefs, given it uses similar systems of logical analysis to philosophy. The teleological presumption that mankind is moving to a more exalted state, whether religious or man-centered, appears to be a widespread, world wide phenomenon. Meliorism is the belief that humans can and have a duty to shape the future for humankind within the flow of the cosmos so that the cosmos reaches its logical end.
