ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a conceptual question: what is sex, and how do we know when we're having it? Philosophers have considered different definitions of sex and sexual activity. I then consider whether sex should always be connected to feelings of romantic love, and I examine the morality of casual sex. I move on to issues that arise when we try to find people to date. I discuss the ethics of internet dating. Then I consider whether our choices of whom to date can ever be considered a form of discrimination. In the final section, I discuss issues surrounding a particular kind of sex: specifically, those involving bondage, discipline, dominance and submission, and sadomasochism – known as BDSM.
