ABSTRACT

This chapter offers practical guidelines for applying a comprehensive framework to evaluate university sustainable-development initiatives. It recognizes that universities will employ variable and tailored applications of any framework for sustainable-development evaluation. The framework for evaluation articulated in Universities and the Sustainable Development Future requires particular attention to curricula, research, outreach, and partnerships and encompasses connections with estate management. Evaluators are challenged to emphasize integrated outcome and impact assessments. All university-evaluation initiatives should aim to involve key stakeholders from the beginning in the evaluation process. The contextual nature of university sustainable-development evaluations requires that project participants and stakeholders identify their most critical shared process, outcome, and impact objectives. Strategic feedback, continuous learning, and transformational change are central features of meaningful higher-education approaches to evaluating sustainable-development activity. The illustrative scheme presented here can be used as guidelines or as a checklist when conducting an evaluation of university involvement in sustainable development.
