ABSTRACT

The Jonglei Scheme is Sudan’s most ambitious development project. Its aim is to recover water lost in the sudd through evaporation and to make it available for irrigation in the North and in Egypt To achieve this, construction of a 360km long canal was started in 1984 and was under construction until work was stopped in 1985 due to insecurity in the area as a result of activities by SPLF/SPLA forces. Excavation was done by the world’s largest single mechanical digger and thus little labour was required; Finance for the scheme was shared equally by Sudan and Egypt.
