ABSTRACT

Putting together the individual steps into phrases while incorporating musicality, form, time, and quality. It feels as if this is the culmination of all the hard work. In traditional forms, a dancer may feel total abandon in a wide, open studio with, seemingly, limitless time and space. There is nothing so freeing as filling up that space with movement. Aerial presents the dancer with a new sort of freedom. The dancer is supporting hardware and helmet while she moves and gravitational forces interact with the body and alignment in new and unusual ways. Each phrase challenges the aerialist in a different way, but focuses on basic skill sets typically used in choreographic works. Any of the previous exercises can be combined in myriads of ways to create phrases like the ones below, so feel free to mix and match.
