ABSTRACT

This chapter explains rules of the game that apply in networks. It distinguishes two types of rules: rules related to the decision-making process and rules related to the position of actors in decision-making. A first rule of play concerns the position of the losing actors. Decision-making in networks ideally has the characteristics of a win-win game but can of course also result in an outcome that means gain for one and loss for the other. In the second, each actor has core values: values that affect the core of his right to exist. The rule of play is that each actor in the process must get the chance to explain the content of the process’s result. Mutual trust can only occur in a process. During the interaction process the parties get to know each other and each other’s points of view and interests.
