ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the idea of the knowledge economy and reviews existing prevalent definitions of knowledge. The aim is to explore and determine a definition of knowledge that is most appropriate for creative knowledge workers. This chapter argues that there is no one definition of knowledge and that there are differing perspectives of knowledge. It also notes that advanced technologies are important in the manipulation of knowledge especially for commercial activities. These arguments are supported by literature from economics, management, and sociology. For the purpose of this chapter, knowledge is classified as: technologically modified (by Bell, 1973; Castells, 2000; Quah, 2002) and applied (by Lash and Urry, 1994; Nonaka and Takeuchi, 1995; Knorr Cetina, 2005a).
