ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 focuses on the process of holistic learning and development for children aged birth to three years old, specifically through their play. Children’s natural disposition to play, the type of play that they engage in and how this impacts on their learning and development are investigated. The way that the different areas of learning and development affect play is also discussed – for example, the way that physical growth and development enables different types of play, and social mastery draws other children into the play arena. Some of the ways that children reveal their thoughts, skills and personalities during play make this an essential area of investigation while considering holistic development.
