ABSTRACT

Some children who will go on to have additional needs or Special Educational Needs (SEN), but these may only become apparent as they grow and develop. For some children these will be significant and lifelong, whereas for other they may be transitory – for example, glue ear. Embracing the philosophy of children’s holistic development, Chapter 8 reviews good practice that supports all children, whether there is an SEN or not. There are a number of ideas in this chapter that will help practitioners in any type of setting to support, stretch and challenge babies and children in all areas of learning and development. These have been developed from practical experience and advice from a range of multi-agency professionals, such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and specialist teachers.
