ABSTRACT

Even minor conflict plays a significant role in our lives. Developing an understanding of conflict is the beginning point for improving skills. This chapter introduces us to the world of conflict management, starting with a working definition that highlights the importance of perceived goal interference. Differentiating between conflict, argument, and negotiation, this chapter provides tools for self-reflection about assumptions and choices we make in conflict. The benefits of becoming a competent conflict manager include increasing personal power, saving money, building confidence, establishing personal standards, and creating opportunities.
