ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses cultural differences among the dark triad personalities and the effect of culture on their behaviors. It seems that the main value dominating research on the effect of culture on the dark triad is the comparison between collectivist and individualistic cultures. Collectivist cultures place great emphasis on norms of reciprocity and are less likely to tolerate the social exchange violations perpetrated by the dark triad. Yet it seems based on the existing theory and findings that dark triad traits will have more difficulties in performing Counterproductive Work Behavior in collectivist traditional cultures compared with individualistic modern cultures. Cross-cultural research that focuses on psychopathy as well as on narcissism and Machiavellianism, is still in its infancy and has primarily been conducted in Western, developed cultures. The public sector is an ideal setting not only for psychopaths but also for Machiavellians mainly because of the strong political culture in the public sector.
