ABSTRACT

Most gardening activities require the use of hand-tools, machines, glass, water and some fertilisers and chemicals. Safe and careful handling of these items is essential, with special attention always being paid to the presence of children, other people and pets. The purchase of good-quality and fit-for-purpose equipment is firmly advocated. This may entail added costs but makes gardening more effective and easier. Annotated lists and descriptions of tools, machines, fertilisers and plant protective structures are provided. All tools and machines should be rendered safe when not in use, stored securely, cleaned and serviced regularly. A first-aid kit should be available.
