ABSTRACT

For most teachers, the concept of support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is synonymous with the deployment of teaching assistants (TAs) or support/curriculum/inclusion assistants. In terms of PE and sport provision, however, there is a much larger net to be cast, and teachers should be well-informed about the support, funding and opportunities available for improving youngsters' access to activities. Assessors will look for evidence of real partnerships with outside organisations such as sports clubs, while wanting reassurance of the involvement of senior management in the application process, to ensure the school takes ownership of its project. A major issue for many children with special educational needs who wish to access after-school clubs is their reliance on school transport to get them home. However, even though an Awards for All grant will help overcome this problem initially, innovative thinking is needed to sustain such a project long term.
