ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the characteristics of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its relationship with the IFIs. The chapter summarises some key developments of the ILO as knowledge creator, standard setter, and its role in the multilateral system. It analyses some key developments in relation to the cooperation with the IMF and the World Bank which is coordinated and managed by the ILO Multilateral Cooperation Department. Areas of cooperation comprise, for example, social protection and social security. Despite its normative influence in the global governance system, the ILO faces several challenges such as the functioning of the principle of tripartism and the limitation of financial resources.
