Given the transformational hypothesis, one possible assumption is that a "rule feature" (Lakoff 1970) is associated with verbs and predicates; thus if the transformation introducing for-to is called ~, then [judging from (2) and (5)] the verbs distress, imply, manage would be marked in the lexicon (either directly or by a redundancy rule) as [+R], [-R], respectively.
