Ithinkthereareatleasttwogeneralreasonsfor
doingthingsthisway.First,usingstoragedevices
representsanelegantescapepathnotfromtheletterbut
certainlyfromthespiritoftherule-by-rulehypothesis.
Itisonethatisnecessarytohandlebinding,Ithink,
butithastobelimitedasseverelyaspossible.The
secondreasonisthatthereareahostofphenomenawhich
itself{iftherearenomodifiers).Anotherclearcaseis theencliticconjunctiveparticle-queinLatin,orthe
AlsotheEnglishpossessiveconstructionsortheverbal
morphologicaloperationsthatmustbedefinedonphrasal
domains.Itmightbe,then,thatalloperationsof
wouldallowustogiveauniformandgeneralcharacteriza-
instead,wouldapply"across-the-board"toalltheitems
inaphrase(grantedthattheymaybeundefinedforsome items).Thegeneralpicturethatemergesfromthisisthe following.Syntacticoperationsbringtogetherelements
ofvariouscategories.Categories,however,donot
contain!ullyformedwordsbutarchiwords.Weindex
(features)underconditionsofgovernmentandagreement (sec.4.2).Theseoperationswillcomeintoplayassoon astheirdomainisreachedinthecourseofthesyntactic
derivation.Thetheoryofgovernmentandpercolationisa
setofprincipledetermininghowindexingofarchiwordsby
morphologicaloperationsinteractswithsyntacticpro-
cesses.
