ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study that illustrates the challenges of dealing with shelter, supplies, and evacuation issues in the absence of modern resources. In modern times the infrastructure may exist for more modern communication, but that does not always guarantee it will be working properly during times of crisis. Administrators in underdeveloped parts of the world should take heed of the issues and attempt to reinforce infrastructure as much as possible to weather a natural disaster. Research facilities containing items and materials that can pose a safety issue to the population require precautions that are unique for administrators and first responders. It is essential for a facility administrator to maintain an accurate inventory of all research materials classified as a select agent, radioactive isotope or chemical that is reported under the federal guidelines.
