ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the various opportunities currently being pursued to reduce or eliminate food insecurity. It examines how the United States pursues domestic food security policy. The chapter reviews the multinational and global efforts to improve nutritional conditions for households worldwide. It makes observations about the relationship between household food security and the operational effectiveness of our agri-food systems. The chapter explores the role of "food hubs" in achieving efficient and equitable food distributional outcomes. It examines the growing importance of local agri-food systems, regional food networks and public-private partnerships that can help establish sustainable food-secure conditions over the long term. National and international agencies and governments profess their commitments to help every household achieve a food-secure status. A food insecure household is a socio-economic condition that limits or prevents household members' access to healthy nutritional dietary choices. One method to compare food-security classifications across different nations is to use a common measurement instrument.
