ABSTRACT

Retrospective introduction In some ways the articles reproduced in this and the previous chapter may be considered a pair: both are concerned with social policy, and were published in Critical Social Policy; both draw on Italian experiences; and both demonstrate a certain and developing characteristic detail in my analysis, in these cases, of different social legislation and policy. There are also differences between them: the first (Chapter 3) focuses more on the situation in Italy and is more of a case study; the article reproduced in this chapter is more concerned with the situation in the UK (at that time), and refers to the Italian experience of mental health reform as a way of contrasting models and philosophies of community care. In this respect I think it demonstrates a development in my thinking (which is more integrative) and writing (which is more integrated): I particularly like the point I made, albeit briefly, about policy (in this case, community care) as pathology. This chapter also introduces and references a specific analysis and methodology which, subsequently, has had a profound influence on my thinking and work (see Chapter 7 and Tudor, 1992, 1996c, 2010e).
